“I Know” …. The two most dangerous words in business … and life!
I was out and about over the weekend and heard a friend of mine talking to his teenage son. Anyone who has teenage children will understand this one undeniable fact …. Most teenagers know everything and can be told nothing! What response do you get when you try to tell them anything … “I Know!”
Now how many times have you had a similar discussion in your workplace, maybe with a team member about their performance, and although they may be nodding, inside they are just silently saying to themselves that “they know all this” so aren’t listening or taking in your feedback.
When you say “I know”, your brain closes down to the possibility of learning and taking in new information depriving you of the opportunity to learn and grow yourself or your business.
And, how many times could you catch yourself doing the same thing? Here’s my challenge to you. When you catch yourself saying OR thinking, “I know that” replace it with “Now isn’t that interesting” and see what happens.
After all, we can’t solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them!
